LPAR

Logical Partition

A logical partition: an independent, virtualized instance of an operating system running on a shared physical Power server.

An LPAR divides a physical Power server into multiple independent operating system instances, each with its own allocated processor, memory, and I/O resources. On Power6 and every generation since, a single machine can run IBM i, AIX, and Linux LPARs concurrently through PowerVM.
