Third-Party Maintenance Explained: What TPM Does and Doesn't Cover

Updated August 22, 2026

Once IBM's standard support ends, IBM stops providing hardware maintenance, machine code updates, and security patches for that model, but independent third-party maintenance (TPM) providers step in with parts, break-fix support, and monitoring contracts.

Typical Cost Savings50-70% versus IBM OEM support pricing, per Gartner
Extended Support Window3-5+ years past OEM end-of-service is common
What TPM CoversParts replacement, break-fix labor, and often proactive monitoring
What TPM Does Not CoverIBM i, AIX, or firmware code updates and security patches

This is the critical limitation of TPM: it keeps the physical hardware running, but it does not restore IBM's software and firmware patch stream. See our maintenance page for what to ask a provider before signing.
